How referral attribution works

The first person who brought someone to Overskill keeps the referral — a later link click, a later template remix, or a later invite code doesn't take it away. Here's the order attribution is decided in, with worked examples.

Short version: the first person who brought someone to Overskill keeps the referral. A later link click, a later template remix, or a later invite code doesn't take it away.

What sets a referral

Three things can attach a referral to a buyer. They're checked in this order, and the first one that matches wins:

1. Who invited them to Overskill (first touch) — strongest. If the buyer joined the waitlist through your invite code or referral link, they're tied to you. This beats everything below it, including someone else's link clicked later.

2. Whose template they first remixed. If the buyer has no waitlist referrer, but the first marketplace template they ever remixed was yours, the referral goes to you.

3. The referral link they most recently clicked (last touch) — weakest. Only used when neither of the above applies. This is the last-touch link cookie, set when someone opens your ?ref= link, and it lasts 60 days.

First touch wins — worked examples

You referred someone, then they clicked another affiliate's link. You keep the referral. A later link click does not override an existing waitlist referrer.

You referred someone, then they remixed another creator's template. You keep the referral. Template remix is only checked when the buyer has no waitlist referrer.

Someone remixed your template, but they joined the waitlist through another affiliate. That affiliate keeps the referral. A waitlist referral happens before any on-platform remix, so it holds.

Someone remixed your template and had no prior referrer. The referral is yours.

Someone already on the waitlist redeems a different person's invite code. The original referrer keeps it. Redeeming a code creates the referral link only for a brand-new signup — it does not overwrite an existing one. An existing account that enters a code is sent to sign-in instead, and the code isn't consumed. See Invite codes and referral links.

What you earn

1,000 credits, both sides. When someone you referred makes their first paid purchase, you get 1,000 credits and they get 1,000 credits. Once per person referred. It doesn't apply to renewals or to $0/test payments.

20% commission on their first year. You earn 20% commission on the subscription plans of people you refer — on the first payment and on every renewal through their first year (12 months). It's paid out through our partner program.

Credit packs don't pay commission. One-time credit packs (Games Packs, Power Pack, Value Pack, Builder Pack, Enterprise Pack, and the like) aren't part of the commission program. Only recurring subscription plans earn commission.

Commission is paid out through our payments partner after a standard hold period, and a refund reverses the matching commission. For the full mechanics, see Affiliate program — how it works (and when it's available to you).

When a referral doesn't count

  • Referring yourself. Self-referrals are blocked.
  • Internal or staff accounts. These don't generate commissions.
  • A malformed or unknown referral handle. It's ignored rather than guessed at.
  • A code that's expired, already used, or fully redeemed. The person can still sign up, but no referral attaches.
  • Clicking a link more than 60 days before purchase. The last-touch cookie has expired by then. (This doesn't affect you if you're the waitlist referrer — that has no expiry.)

Common questions

Someone I referred bought after clicking another affiliate's link. Who gets it? You do, if you're their waitlist referrer. First touch wins.

I keep referring people but see no commission. Check what they bought. Credit packs don't pay commission — only subscription plans do. Also confirm they were tied to you before the purchase, not after.

Can I see who's tied to me? Yes — your invites page lists your codes and referrals, and your affiliate page shows your earnings.

Does my referral expire? The last-touch link cookie expires after 60 days. Being someone's waitlist referrer doesn't expire.
